Create an Online Newspaper
Online newspapers, magazines and newsletters are great tools to keep people interested and up-to-date.

ou are reading an online magazine created with the Newspaper template. The Newspaper template is one of the most powerful and exciting templates in the iZotz library in that it lets you build a great variety of online publishing tools with a lot of flexible options. If you need to publish timely content on a regular basis, this template probably will make your life a whole lot easier, and might even create some exciting new ways you can distribute your content.

This template will let you create either a periodical or a rolling publication. A periodical something that is published on a specific date, and remains current until the next edition is published. Print magazines and newspapers are periodicals. Rolling publications publish a steady stream of articles that individually begin on a certain date, and either disappear on a specifc date or expire after a certain amount of time and go into the archives. The CNN website is an example of a rolling publication...articles constantly appear and disappear.

You can create multipage publications with Sections like a newspaper or magazine. Or you can create a single page publication with all articles displayed on one page, like a newsletter might have.

Authors can submit content directly from the webpage. Editors can then review and edit that content and decide when and where to publish it.

You can link other projects, making it easy to integrate your other internet projects into the publication. This makes it easy to add things like Forums, Classified Ads, Contact Us pages, and even other publications...making it possible to use your online publication as the main event in your internet presence.

Creating an Online Newspaper

Setting up an online Newspaper or magazine is easy, simply select the Newspaper template when you create a new project. You'll then want to configure things to function like you want. Open the project manager to access the various options.

Choose a Layout

Click the Appearance tab and select an appearance skin. The Newspaper module probably works best as a standalone webpage. When run within a website it may not have enough room in that website's appearance template to layout properly. So select an appearance template that matches the other websites in your collection, and it will fit right in.

The Newspaper template has an additional important appearance setting that affects how the newspaper is laid out. Click the Content tab, then click the Settings link, then select a Layout option. The Layout option controls how the newspaper looks within the parent appearance skin. There are a number of layouts available.

Choose a Publication Type

It's best to choose a publication type then stick with it. Decide up front whether you want to publish a periodical or a rolling publication, and whether or not it will be a single page or multipage format. If you change these settings later the different way publication dates are handled by each option may interrupt the flow of articles to your newspaper with unpredictable results. Pick a format and stick with it.

If you choose the rolling publication option, be sure to set the number of days that an article remains current. The default value is 7 days, which isn't very long. If you don't have a steady stream of new articles coming in every week, you may want to increase this setting to 30 days or more.

Enable Article Submissions

This feature will allow your authors to submit articles and photos by clicking a link on the newspaper homepage. This makes it very convenient for your authors, and means you don't have to open the newspaper administration pages to them. When an author submits an article, it goes into the UNPUBLISHED pile and waits for editorial review. Once reviewed, an editor can publish the article.

Configure the Sections

Your newspaper can have sections just like print newspapers. Under Content Options, click the Edit button next to Sections. Think carefully about what sections you want to have. While you can later change them, it can be an administration headache to go back and reassign articles to new sections should you decide to delete a section.

Edit the Masthead

Click the Masthead Edit button to open an editor that allows you to create a masthead for your newspaper. The masthead can contain text and graphics, and most likely will contain whatever newspaper logo you want to use.

Sidebar Modules

Sidebar Modules are links to other web projects. These modules appear in their own menu, and give the user access to whatever projects you want to include in your newspaper. This feature makes it possible to create a full featured online publication that includes just about anything you can dream up. You can include Community Forums, Blogs, Photo Galleries, Classified Ads, or whatever else might be useful to your visitors. In effect you could create an entire standalone web presence by combining the publication capabilities of the newspaper module with other modules adding additional features. Some people might find the administration of the newspaper module much easier than a standard website and decide to make it their primary website. If you don't want your "pages" to expire and disappear, all you have to do is set expiration dates way into the future. In effect you end up with a static website.

Advertising

If you want to offer advertisers space in your online newspapers, you can enable the Advertising option.  Built into the templates are placeholders for graphic ads. You can enable either a banner ad in the header, a block ad in the sidebar, or a banner ad in the footer. The Advertising option works in conjunction with the Ad Manager module. You'll need to add the Ad Manager module to your projects to use it. The Ad Manager module allows users to sign up and advertise on your webpages. It includes an ad wizard to help people build graphic ads, and a self service manager that minimizes the time you'll spend handling advertising.

Creating Content

Content articles can either be submitted via the newspaper webpage (if you've enabled this option), or created using the Project Manager. Open the project manager for the project and click the Content tab. To create a new article, click the Create New Article link. Enter the author, article date, publication date, assign it to a section, give it a title, subhead if necessary, a summary, and the body of the article. You can immediately publish the article, or leave it unpublished for future editing.

If you want the article to appear on the front page of your publication, check the Front Page option.

Once published, the article enters the content library and will appear on your newspaper according to the publication date you set.

Scheduling Content

Use the Publication Date to schedule when you want the article to appear in the newspaper. This allows you to create a lot of content beforehand have it automatically populate your publication over a period of time.

Searchable Archives

Once an article goes out of date, it gets archived in the article index. Users can see past articles either by search for articles of interest, or viewing the article index itself. All past articles are available.

Article Summary

If the publication is in a multipage format, there is a menu item called SUMMARY, which causes the newspaper to be formatted as a newsletter. All current articles are placed on a single page, allowing the viewer to quickly scan for topics of interest or easily print out all articles in the current edition.

Think Creative

The Newspaper module is one of the most exciting templates because of the potential things you can do with it. It's easy to imagine making a community newspaper, company magazine, real estate newsletter, and so on...but you might just think up some other ways you can use it in combination with your other websites, projects, or non-internet activities to do some real interesting things. The ability to schedule content, integrate with external projects and websites, and include user submitted content opens new doors in how you can leverage the web to communicate with people.
