Messaging
Helping Your Members Communicate

he Messaging module allows you to add a non-email messaging application to your projects. This application allows website members to send messages to website administrators, a select group of people, or each other.

Your iZotz account includes a feature called Membership, which allows users to sign up and join your various website projects. By clicking the Sign up button on websites where you've enabled membership, users can take advantage of various features that require a login. The Messaging module uses the membership list to enable communication between members.

You configure who is allowed to receive messages. Messages are encrypted and can only be read by either the sender or recipient. An email account is not required. You can add multiple messaging applications to a project, each configured with different settings. This means you can have a messaging page that allows users to send messages to a tech support department, and another page that allows users to commuicate with human resources, or whatever.

This is a great way to implement a messaging help system that allows your website members to get help from website adminstrators. It's also useful in cases where website members want to communicate privately with each other, but don't want to divulge email addresses.

Creating a Messaging Page

  1. Click the Create a New Page link in the Adminstrator and select the Messaging template. Name your page and click Build.
  2. Open the Project Manager for the new project.
  3. Decide who can receive messages. You can select administrators, members, everyone, or choose specific people.
  4. Indicate whether some people can send messages to everyone. You'd typically allow website administrators to do this.
  5. Set whether you want to display usernames, real names, or both in the To pulldown menu.
  6. Click save.
  7. Open the Navbar tool and place your new messaging page on a navbar.

The new page will display a messaging application similar to those found in the email applications we all use. From here you can see received messages, reply and create new messages, and manage your message archives.

Creating Multiple Messaging Pages

You can add as many messaging pages as you want. Each can have a different set of settings. This means you can allow users to send messages to different groups of people from different pages.

Message Security

Messages are encrypted. The only people who can read the message content are the sender and the recipient.

important note: while the message encryption increases privacy, it does not make your messages completely secure. The messaging module should not be considered to be a full fledge secure messaging solution. Message content is stored encrypted on the server, and would be extremely difficult to unencrypt, making that part of the process reasonably secure. However, messages are exchanged unencrypted across the web, making them vulnerable to those able to sniff out network traffic.
